My problems were during the ODBC stage -- not in parsing the numeric value from
the alpha fields.  I'm well aware of the dangers of atof(), and my service
program routines never did use that.  However, I was not getting the WorldShip
data to the 400 even in alpha fields until I switched to the HiT driver.
