He has no beef, with IBM anyways.  This was clearly documented in the V5R1
release memo.

What is his system value QMAXSPLF?

The question is who supported the version of TAATOOLS that he had?  Perhaps
it was old enough that no one does.  If you get that tool with the OS.  And
if you installed that library with a scratch install of V5R1 then maybe you
would have a beef with IBM if you still had that problem.  Otherwise
contact the people who currently market that tool, cut a check and get the
newest copy.

QMAXSPLF and WRKSPLF changes
The use of output files QAPTACG4 (field JASPNB), QASYSFJ4 (field SFSNUM),
and QSYPOJ4 (field POSPLN) that contain the spooled file number might
require
application changes. In V5R1, new fields have been added to accommodate a
larger spooled file number. If the number is too large for the old field,
the old field
is set to blank and the new field should be referenced to get the number.
To
prevent the need for a change to an application, ensure that the system
value
QMAXSPLF remains set to 9999 (the default value at installation time).
Several messages have changed to include a new 4-byte message data field
that
contains the spooled file number. The old 2-byte fields that already exist
are set to
-1 when the spooled file number exceeds 32 767. Once the 2-byte field is
set to -1,
the spooled file number can be accessed through the 4-byte message field.
If you decide to use the larger fields, applications that use the open
feedback area
might require code changes. It is recommended that you use the larger
fields, but
the smaller fields can still be used.
Views 3 and 4 of the Work with Spooled Files (WRKSPLF) display have
changed.
Previously, view 3 contained the output queue name and library along with
the
spooled file number. With the increase in the spooled file number, view 3
can no
longer contain the output queue name and library as well as the spooled
file
number and other attributes. Therefore, the output queue name and library
are
now in view 4.

fasinating. Yes, it is a very old tool, from the QUSRTOOL libraries, I
don't
know if it's still included or offered in the current TAATools. I used it
quite some time ago, but....

I don't recall, but does it use an API or is it spool file output that is
read back in? If (and I think, for some reason, it was) the latter, then
you
should have seen it coming, as with almost every release, spooled file
output from commands changes constantly. Outfile support changes
occasionally as well, but API's are not supposed to change in the middle of
the structure, without pointer based and offset references.

If it's an API, and it's not clearly documented in the memo to users as an
API change in the programming section, they you have a legitimate beef with
IBM, regardless of the age of the command. The change should have then been
to add a format or add the field to the end of the output. This is
documented in the API references.
