I have sold a "number" of 170's from the "used folks at IBM" and in my
opinion, the very best deals(for developers) are the older 170's with
V4R4 or V4R3 with a P05 process group. By joining PID and getting a good
bit of the software at free or "near free" prices, you can end up with a
very nice machine for very few bucks. The used market is very nice for
dasd and memory also, so upgrading is also fairly painless.

(Warning... Most of my used sales are to my "existing" customers who
 currently hold a license agreement for some version of OS/400.
 This means they are able to order the latest version under their
current
 software agreement.)

The 1% lease from ICC also remains a VERY attractive way to get a 250 or
270 at a very "workable price"....(I assume this still exists)

These are only my opinions and your experieces may vary a great deal...
