Rob, Unfortunately that is consistent with IBM functions. Select fld1, fld2 as xxx, substr(fld2, 3, 1) from file Works fine, but Select fld1, fld2 as xxx, substr(xxx, 3, 1) from file Complains the xxx isn't in the file. To make it more annoying you can sort on the renamed fields however.
