Everyone has their pet 5250 emulator and I have mine. I've been in the connectivity biz for 20 years. It took a long time for IBM to put a more-or-less acceptable client on the desktop and they have done that with CAE. However, at 30MB for the minimum install of display, printer, and file transfer it can justly be called FAT (it also costs $275/copy but hey, it's IBM). The adoption of CAE has pressed a consolidation in the 5250 market as companies bought each other or went out of business. NetManage bought Netsoft and Wall Data. Andrew sold Network Products to mgmt who formed Nlynx who bought Decision Data and some else before declaring and emergine from Chap 11. Twinax has essentiall died in most all situations along with SNA. How do you spell relief? T C P I P . Damn....now you can ping to see if a host is out there. I go with the Synapse IP Client. They have the most experinece doing 5250 (since 1979), have free tech support (if you need it), and free updates via the web (refreshing). I have recommended, sold, used, and supported their products in all of their incarnations: SSI, Emerald, Andrew, NetSoft, Attachmate, DCA, Connectronnix, and now Synapse -- http://www.synapse.com. They don't touch the registry, don't make any changes to system.ini, or modify the winsock and it only eats up 5MB on the desktop which includes the on-line, context sensitive help. It has all the hard to do stuff like TN5250e, text assist, and ENPTUI.
