Has anyone heard about this? What do you think?

We want to let you know about a decision that IBM recently made. When you
upgrade to OS/400 V5R1, you will have to license the IBM Media and Storage
Extensions (MSE) feature to run any backup and recovery software program,
including Robot/SAVE. This is because IBM has now included a necessary tapeexit
API in MSE. This API was FREE for many years. Now, IBM wants you to pay for it.
The license for this feature will cost you about $1,000 per
machine...... If
you would like to voice your concerns to IBM, write to Kimberly Stevenson,
Vice President, iSeries, Marketing, Server Group. Her e-mail address is She can reverse this decision, if she wants to.
