we had about 12 hours worth in our sh!tload, and a sys guy that did not run
the estimator... he may never sit down without flinching again.

moral of the story: RUN THE ESTIMATOR! (and add a fudge factor)

When you upgrade there is a conversion that will take place for all
spool files on the system. We saw one system take a few hours to
convert spool files, they had what we call in technical terms a Sh*tload
of spool files. If you run the estimator, its pretty close, and give
you an idea of how long. If you only have a few thousand spool files,
it probably won't take more than 15 minutes.
