This was just answered today on the RPG400 list:

1)  One method, if you are absolutely sure that the parameter coming in is
numeric you can define the parameter as zoned and the same size and you
shouldn't have a problem.

Try using the C Procedure "atoi".  I don't know C but found it very easy to
use anyway.
