Jan, I couldn't agree more...! But arrogance is part of human nature, no so much a feature of this particular list, IMV... And MOST on this list treat posts with respect, regardless of who wrote them... There IS a problem... This list serves folks with a huge range of experience, from the most to the newbie. But two lists would require extra administration, to keep the questions on-topic, and on the proper list... Hard to tell which list would be appropriate, at times... I've learned an awful lot from what some would consider "newbie" questions...:-) jt : -----Original Message----- : From: midrange-l-admin@midrange.com : [mailto:midrange-l-admin@midrange.com]On Behalf Of Jan Megannon : Sent: Friday, November 23, 2001 7:15 PM : To: midrange-l@midrange.com : Subject: Replies : : : -- : [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] : It is amazing how arrogant some of the old hands appear in this list. No : wonder there are no new subscribers to OUR platform. (Within OUR I include : myself, because if AS/400 Division made fridges I'd buy one. If they made : cars, I'd drive one). If this arrogance is the jist of the responses to : enquiries from newbies, how the hell do you expect them to post legitimate : questions?!!! : : I was punting this forum to some of my customers this evening. : They are in a : situation where their management is considering moving off the : AS/400 (iSeries : is just another name for technological perfection!!). I said to : them that they : are our guns and that this list (along with the non-techno list) is the : ammunition that they require to defend the platform. With the : kind of arrogant : B***S*** that is sometimes being flung around here, I should have directed : them to a more subservient (yet less potent) list. I admit that : many of the : people here are very helpful, : : Sometimes even the detractors of other systems can be less : damaging than the : egotism found on this list. Folks, please realize that you are sometimes a : last resort of the one who is either trying to protect this : platform in his : company, or of one who is trying to introduce it due to the technical : capabilities inherent within the system. I see all this rhetoric regarding : FAST400, CFINT and other aspects of IBM trying to nail us. All I : have read so : far is the negative aspects of this! Believe me , I am also up to : HERE with : the pressures placed on us to either fit in or get out of this : platform (I : have a posting due one of these days on that topic). How about : some positive : counter statements to these arguments. We have jt, Joe, Al, Leif, : NEIL,et al, : who are (sometimes negative, but always with a positive slant) : that provide : good feedback. Sometimes a product does get punted, but this is : also positive! : (albeit incorrect) It must be said that the product is often put : forth as it : may be the example that is closest to home. : : I am not suggesting that we all be schoolboys adhering to the behavioral : requests of the headmaster, neither that we forsake the emotive : responses to : our peers. Let us just not be as arrogant as some of those are : who communicate : within the lists that we consider to be our opposition. We are here to : interact, divulge information (non-strategic) and to encourage those : uninformed ones out there to reach technological Nirvana .Or am I : wrong about : this list?? If so, please chastise me and banish me, as I may : possibly have : more productive time that I can spend on other (related) lists. : : Forgive the ranting and ravings of one who absolutely loves the : AS/400, to the : extent that he would give his wife's life for it ( :) ) : : : Cheers from sunny South Africa. : -- : : _______________________________________________ : This is the Midrange Systems Technical Discussion (MIDRANGE-L) : mailing list : To post a message email: MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com : To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, : visit: http://lists.midrange.com/cgi-bin/listinfo/midrange-l : or email: MIDRANGE-L-request@midrange.com : Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives : at http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-l. :
