The response doesn't arrive back at the PCs, so they time out; and the AS/400 sends the response but it's never acknowledged in any way since it doesn't arrive, so it believes the PC was somehow disconnected. A comm trace on the AS/400 should show that it sent the response. Once the trace shows that, the network guys should be able to look at it and see where the problem with it is.
