Tapes will always be outdated before they are generally accepted. 8mm seem
to be popular among PC servers. QIC seem to be generally accepted among
midrange systems. Larger systems lean towards the 1/2 cartridges like the
3480/3490's. Most everyone has CD's and that tends to be the new media of
choice. Now DVD's are quickly gaining popularity. Everyone has a player on
the PCs. If the data will fit on one or two CD's, I would go that way. If
you are upgrading to the 8xx or 270 latest hardware, definitely get the DVD
burner. I think it will also burn CD's. CD media is about 10 to 25 cents
each. DVD runs several dollars. Tapes are very expensive. 55 to 75
dollars for the original B model Magstar tapes. I have lost track of other
tapes since we do not use them much.

Subject: Tape or Other Media / Common

What is your input as far as what is most commonly used or
preferred in the rest of the non-AS400 world? Are people getting
away from tape drives and cartridges entirely? Are they gravitating
to CD's or other media? Just trying to gather some other opinions
and see what the rest of the world has to say.
