Which does sound as though you keep in mind it is but one factor in
performance.

Sure, and then IBM will defeat that, and on and on. My point being that
there is no value in that to the iSeries community. If the revenue is
needed to justify the continued marketing of the iSeries then the best we
can hope for out of the "battle" is that IBM will continue to waste effort
that could better be spent upgrading things we really want.

The worst we can see from it is that those within IBM who feel the headache
of supporting a proprietary system is greater than its profit will win out
and IBM will drop the iSeries from their future plans.

Thus my contention that Fast400's value is less than zero. We have nothing
to gain as a community from it.

I would say that some sites who are not concerned with IBM maintenance nor
the long term viability of the product could see benefit from Fast400. But
I don't see how a consultant or employee could recommend the purchase of a
machine based on the existance of the Fast400 product, since we all know
that circumstances may exist that force us not to use it. In other words,
we may NEED to apply the ptf that disables Fast400 because it is
prerequisite to other job related ptfs or services.

It's also possible that defeating hacks like the Fast400 product might be
easy enough that IBM won't have to waste a lot of resources on it so it
doesn't cost us much.
