We use QCTL except on the following machines
3 - Dedicated Servers for Domino
1 - little 40S used for a special application.

See no need for a QBATCH, QINTER, etc in this environment. Basically I
agree with IBM's decision. Changing the controlling subsystem is so easy
that those who need to do will know how. However for those small simple
environments...

When the AS/400 was developed, there was a belief that S/36 users would
migrate faster and in bigger numbers to the S/36E (or even native) than
S/38 users. Ah well, I thought that the Yankees were going to win last
night too!

QBASE was thought to be a simpler solution that QCTL, QSPL, QINTER and
QBATCH, so it was shipped as the default. Most knowledgeable users
immediately changed this to QCTL, because the overhead was spilt up into
more tasks, given the limited power of the B level hardware . Today, I
don't think it matters much, but I do use QCTL.

It's kind of like what you are used to.

Dan,
Just so happens I'm working on a similar problem for a client. They're
starting up in QBASE, I'm changing it to QCTL (as I believe it should be)
If you'll look at the default QSYS/QSTRUP you'll see an IF statement which
starts up some subsystems IF the controlling subsystem is QCTL.
Ships with QBASE as the controlling subsystem, I've been changing it to
QCTL
since V3.
I do not know why it ships as QBASE?????
