I think you've hit the nail on the head, Tom. I really like BRMS. There is a learning curve of course, but it shouldn't be a serious barrier to anyone who's prepared to invest time and effort in a sound backup strategy. The more complex your environment, the harder it is to be sure you've got everything covered. There's a point (which comes surprisingly early on) at which having to learn BRMS, or a competing product, is less hassle than managing without.
