I'm not sure you can do much better than CHGSPLFA USRDTA('someNewValue') and 
then a simple HLDSPLF. By setting USRDTA(), you have a value you can check 
later. And HLDSPLF gives practically the same result as SAV as long as USRDTA() 
can also be tested.
