I know you just said that they were not interested in a commercial product, but it would be much cheaper and faster to buy a cpommercial product for this task. Where I work, we use SPOOLMAIL from gumbo software. It cost about 700$ for a P10 machine, It can be installed and configured in less that 30 minutes.
