Chuck,

Sounds like you are up for cleanup time on your system. Before upgrading
make double and triple sure you have enough DASD. Upgrading the OS does
take additional DASD!

I know that IBM sent out an upgrade checklist for the few upgrades I had
done, and one of the things they specified there was how much free DASD
was required to upgrade. Make sure you find out this number and that you
have it available!

We were at 84% DASD usage or so and are going to be doing an upgrade soon,
so started cleanup stuff up. Clearing some files we never used, RTVDSKINF,
and some other tools we very quickly dropped 20% DASD without even trying
too hard. These were the obvious DASD eaters. We will start looking at
some of the other files and we are going to be reorganizing files (over
2.4gb in 2 libraries) and I expect we will drop another 15 to 20% at least
before all is said and done.

Although with 61% DASD used we have no worries now for upgrading.

As someone else said, if you are concerned about the miniscule amount of
DASD used when permanently applying PTFs before you IPL, you should not
even think about considering contemplating the thought of upgrading.

Subject: Permanently Applying PTF's...
Reply-To: midrange-l@midrange.com

Hi Folks,

Getting ready to do an OS upgrade (V4R1 to V4R5 FINALLY) in the coming
weeks and going down the check list of stuff to do. I need to get PTF's
permanently applied which is no real problem but I do have one question:

Until an IPL when these actually do get applied (well the ones that need
at IPL to apply) does this actually increase storage ?

Reason I ask is we are "cramped for disk space" and I started with some
of the smaller LICPGM's (i.e. Performance Tools, App Dev, etc.) and did
them and noticed that a bunch of stuff was placed in the library QRPLOBG
which of course gets cleared at IPL. My fear is that if I Apply all of
the temp PTF's, this library will grow and I might have a problem. When
all users are off the disk utilization drops by 5-6% !! So what I would
do is wait until then to Apply the rest and then IPL (we IPL on
Sunday)..

Thanks for any information on this !

Chuck
