I don't think you are missing anything, the problem is not with commit 
boundaries.
I would just like to be able to specify the activation group that SQL uses. 
Other
options would be to have it behave like qcmdexc or qcmd and be somewhat
transparent as far as activation groups are concerned.

By SQL do you mean embedded SQL? I've not seen any problems with commit
transaction boundaries, and I've always user *CALLER on the trigger program
whenever possible, specifically so that the trigger would execute within
the default transaction scope. Am I missing something here?
