Rob's (and others') issue with having to unsubscribe or filter out incoming mail from numerous lists when going on vacation notwithstanding...
My feeling on the matter is that it really doesn't matter how many lists there are, I'll just subscribe to the security list and it will arrive in my inbox just like all the others. Actually, it will get filtered into a new Midrange-Security folder in Outlook, which is a nice plus for me.
However, thinking to myself made me come up with one really ugly problem with so many lists. When I go to the archives and search for something, and let's say in this instance that it's security related, I'll likely want to search more than one list. Midrange-L, and now Midrange-Security. Maybe others? One way to solve this problem would be to allow a search to be specified for multiple lists.
Just my .02.

I agree with Rob, there are too many lists.
Often a posting doesn't fall cleanly in any of the
list categories, so it is hard to place it. Many
people subscribe to all (or many) lists anyway.
( I omit here the special RPG and JAVA lists).
Often a thread "degenerates" from being, say, technical
to be chat. musing, or flame. So it is hard to
keep the list clean anyway. The usefulness of
the MIDRANGE list derives from its broad scope.
