I've only ever worked for a software house/vendor/business partner/whatever, or
for myself as I do now.  My AS/400 is installed at my house though, so I guess
that does make me a resident programmer. <g>

For the average PC used in what capacity?  I think you can safely ignore the
home market for this comparison -- not too many 400's are sold to the home
market, you and me notwithstanding.

If you compared businesses using PC's to replace a 400, or a new installation
doing the workload traditionally associated with a "typical" 400, I would expect
the proportion of shops with a resident programmer to be at least as high.   

And I'd expect the proportion of non-programmer technical staff, such as
networking and database administrators, to be higher than on the 400.
