If you wonder why people can get away with saying that the AS/400 is dead,
look at the source on new professionals entering the profession.

For the past five years, I have spent one night a week teaching at my local
community college (trust me, I don't do it for the money). I am the only
individual that the college has been able to retain that knows the
AS/400. Everyone else in the population either doesn't have a Master's
degree or is so busy with their families and careers that they don't want
to take the time to help out.

My AS/400 intro course (web site http://www.bergen.cc.nj.us/faculty/jmyers/
) is always over-subscribed (even when I taught it on a FRIDAY Night). The
college could fill several additional sections if it had the instructors to
staff it. They could offer & fill a complete AS/400 curriculum if others,
like myself, chose to devote a night a week to advance their profession. A
WHOLE LOT OF STUDENTS WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE AS/400, BUT THERE AREN'T
ENOUGH INSTRUCTORS TO TEACH THEM.

DON'T BLAME IBM. My company is the sponsor of the IBM AS/400 Partners in
Education program for the college. IBM has been more than helpful to the
college. My students operate on a new technology AS/400 that the college
leases at VERY attractive rates (1% of retail value per month).

Many of the other faculty members have told the students that the AS/400 is
a dead box. That's because they don't know anything about it & it
threatens the competing architectures that they teach. Without more voices
like mine, I get drowned out.

Who else will step up in their own local communities?
