I have to add a comment here.  While I would agree that this is true for the
majority, I have to take exception, especially for our company.  We work on
the basis that we will maximize profits over the long-term by nuturing
relationships with our clients.  As a service oriented company that
primarely employs skilled labor we cannot afford a lot of turn-over, so we
must look out for our employees' well-being.  Of course, we are not a
fortune 500 company where the CEO is motivated by a bonus based on a single
year's profits.  Nor are we a retail outlet where the customers are just
faceless statistics.  Unfortunately, in general you are correct, that
businesses are motivated by short-term profits, as opposed to long-term
success.  Fortunately there are some of us to refuse to give in!
