I'm the chief decision-maker around here, and even as I think about the
families who rely on me and my management team, I'm considering some painful
options. But summarily dismissing everybody seems to be unnecessarily harsh
when only the MC division is being shut down (not IIR itself, right?).
Okay, they're not weasels but they *are* low-rent.

I have no connection, direct interest, or indirect interest with MC or IIR;
my comments are based solely on my belief that IIR principals attended the
Exxon School Of Crisis Management. IIR's bad behavior may only be starting:
will MC staffers receive any severance pay or exit benefits? Will authors
receive full compensation for articles published?

It's been tough for the dot-com's...and that much harder when they can't
have a big "we're pulling the plug" blowout funded by investors' (not
stockholders') money. I sympathize with the out-of-work crowd, but the
truth is that many were lured by compensation packages with no basis in
business reality. I'm not saying greed is bad, I'm saying risk (actually,
"uncertainty") rises with reward. MC must have made money at some point,
which also sets them apart from most of the dot-coms...including Amazon.com.

The only think tougher than making a tough decision is delivering it with
class, and IIR has *not* attended that school.

Reeve,

I always enjoyed Midrange Computing and I can understand your frustration
with IIR for shutting them down. However, the reality of business today is
that businesses sometimes lose money and eventually have to close the
doors. Many of us have (or know of others who have) experienced this harsh
fact of business today firsthand. Consider all the "dot.com's" that have
shut down in the last year. It's no fun for employees and its no fun for
employers either.

Maybe IIR could have handled the situation differently, although we don't
know the particulars, only the result. I suspect that the people at IIR
are not weasels and probably thought long and hard about the realities of
their business. Being a decisionmaker is not always fun nor easy.

Bill
