If the API is a normal system API in the SPIR manual the CHAR(*) means an 
arbitrary charcter field or data structure.

If the API is a Unix-like API then char * means a pointer to a character 
string (usually null-terminated).

Notice the difference in encoding:  CHAR(*) versus char *

In this case the CHAR(*) is the error code parameter so it means a character 
data structure of any length greater than or equal to 8 bytes that follows 
the layout described for the Qus_Ec structure.
