How about a compromise. OS/400 allows one to "Select Assistance Level" for
a number of commands (DSPMSG, WRKWTR, WRKSYSSTS, ...) Casual and
inexperienced users would get their pull downs/combo boxes; More
experienced users would not. Casual and inexperienced users would get
somewhat poorer response times as these controls get populated; More
experienced users would not experience this reduction in performance.

As the data returned from the UI is the same, the same application logic to
validate the data is used.

I agree (to a degree). Although the ability to 2,3,4,4,3,5,3 is not there
(and is desirable), many list-type controls allow the selection of multiple
list items by using Shift-click and/or Ctrl-click. This can be used for
multiple 2's or 3's or 4's at a time.

I must confess though, that while I tend to use 2,3,4,4,3,5,3 during
development and testing, I have observed that most users (casual and
otherwise) tend to be in one mode (ADD/CHG/DLT/DSP) or another at a time.
