The 3494 can connect with IP, but it is SNA over ethernet I believe. We did have problems with this, so we went async. Also, most libraries in the PC world actually use the TCP/IP to move the data. In the iSeries/3494 scenario, the link is used to commmunicate with the library, while the data to the cartridges is via SCSI or better yet, FibreChannel.
