Yes, off topic - what happened to Free OS/400 ? - but being 30-plus is no
disadvantage for sure, Joe!

I spent the first half of Y2K explaining to 20-somethings the "not if it's
a century year" thing. I had the same issues when I was traing programmers
- why do we need to do this - what's a Julian date about ....

OK, maybe it's good that education is more specialised, but I do
increasingly feel that we are coding/configuring
for the real world & being pushed for time by empire-builders with a
short-term outlook - Thank God for SQL ....

I guess IT people always have the uneasy feeling of looking through a
microscope and a telescope simultaneously, and the overview is easily lost.

My first job was mainly a 36 -> 400 conversion, working with engineers,
whose stunning, meticulous professionalism impressed the heck out of me.
Inspiring, & I still believe that software engineers have a long way to go
to match that maturity - not conservatism, by any means, but the
perspective of being on a truly multi-user system, & not the only car on
the road.

(Forgive this rambling - it's not as though I know you guys personally.)
Fiona
