We actually had one. It was called Netfinity. (It was probably
strategic.) Had a team of IBMer's here trying to get it to work. Went 1/3
of a million dollars over the consulting budget that year. IBM dropped
that turkey. I did like some of the features.
Now we are using Tivoli.
Next we will be using Computer Associates.

There are two school's of thought on this.

One, search the registry for certain entries.
Two, search the disk for certain files.

Netfinity used a table of files. And you could have duplicate entries of
file names. Dates might indicate a version.

At one time someone posted something to this list about a homegrown thing
to check the registry. Might have been a few years back.

One of the goals of these packages is to also make software distribution a
cinch. Press the magic button and all users will now have the latest
version of Office, Notes or whatever. You can even tailor them to say:
They must have a minimum of x amount of memory and whatnot.

Does anyone know of AS/400 software that will allow the 400 to poll PCs on
the network and pull down product licenses/software keys? In particular we
would be interested in the licenses for Windows as well as the licenses for
Office products.

I may be contacted offline if this would breach any guidelines of
solicitation.
