I'm using Outlook 97. How do you click on the "plain text option" when replying to messages?
Other users of Outlook 97: What does your "Send Options for this Recipient Properties" for Midrange-L show? For lack of better understanding, I checked that "I want to specify the format for messages to this recipient" and selected the MIME format with "Plain text" only. Instead of MIME, I could select "Plain text/UUEncode" but that appears to be specific to Macintosh; would that make a difference for the list mail?
I have just searched through "Clippy", and the only way to tell Outlook to send "plain text" is to uncheck the "Always send to this recipient in Microsoft Exchange rich text format" box, which I have done. This is my second week using Outlook, previously our email was about as text-based as could be - from a mainframe based email server.
For all the complaining I've done over the past year or so about this problem, it bugs the heck out of me to be contributing to it.

Don't know what version of Outlook you're using, but in 2000, the format of
the reply will be the format of the original message unless you explicitly
change it. When you click on the plain text option you get a heavy handed
warning about losing valuable attributes of the message. Seems to me it was
the same way in '97 although anything more than a few hours ago is a little
fuzzy for me.
The excerpt below came in to me as HTML or RTF.

>PLEASE TURN OFF HTML!
CR*P! When I created the address book entry for the mailing lists, I
specified to *NOT* send in microsoft Rich Text Format. On another form, I
selected "MIME-plain text". The other options were: "Plain text/UUEncode".
I see no options for HTML. I'm using Outlook 97. (Is that the bug?)
If someone knows how to turn this off so that I never send HTML to the list,
please let me know!
Are *ALL* my posts arriving with HTML? I ask because I've suspected that it
may also be caused by the messages you reply to, and if they're HTML-coded,
Outlook may ignore my preferences and do likewise with my reply.
Sorry for the mess!
