Time to touch on a "hot" topic around here. Someone up in my
organization has decided that we need to fireproof our remote AS/400
backup units. The idea is to enclose the backup unit in its own
fireproof vault. I imagine that this would also be our answer to secure
the backup media as well. Has anyone done this? Wouldn't these units
have to be cooled in some manner to offset the heat generated by the
tape drive? Below is some information we received from a vendor. Has
anyone had experience with the Mammoth tape drives on the AS/400?
TO GET THE FIREPROOF TAPE SOLUTION FOR YOUR (5) AS/400'S THAT WOULD DO
BACKUPS FOR A WEEK AUTOMATICALY WITH NO INTERVENTION YOU WOULD NEED THE
FOLLOWING THINGS.
(4) MAMMOTH 1 TAPE UNITS WITH SEVEN TAPE AUTOLOADER: $9500.00 EACH
(1) MAMMOTH 2 TAPE UNIT WITH SEVEN TAPE AUTOLOADER: $14500.00 EACH
(5) FIREPROOF CUSTOM CABINETS GIVING PROTECTION FOR TWO HOURS AT UP TO
350 DEGREES: $5995.00 EACH
DELIVERY OF THE CUSTOM BOXES WOULD BE ABOUT 4-6 WEEKS
TAPES FOR MAMMOTH 1 TAPE UNITS $60.00 EACH
TAPES FOR MAMMOTH 2 TAPE UNIT $82.00 EACH
EACH AS/400 WOULD NEED A 6501 TAPE ATTACH FEATURE IF THE MACHINE DOES
NOT HAVE ONE. A 6501 COST IS $200.00 PLUS IBM WOULD NEED TO INSTALL IT
IF THE MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE ONE.
THE MAMMOTH TAPE UNITS COME WITH A ONE YEAR IBM ONSITE WARRANTY.
THE OTHER ISSUE THAT WOULD NEED TO BE TAKEN CARE OF IS THE SOFTWARE TO
RUN BACKUPS FOR A WEEK WITH NO HUMAN LABOR DURING THE WEEK. YOU HAVE
THREE OPTIONS THAT I KNOW OF
1. SOMEONE ON YOUR STAFF DOES THE PROGRAMMING TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.
2. YOU HAVE OR BUY IBM SOFTWARE PRODUCT CALLED B.R.M.S. THE COST FOR
THIS SOFTWARE IS BASED OF THE PROCESSOR ON YOUR MACHINE BUT I HAVE BEEN
TOLD IT COULD RUN $3000-$6000 PER MACHINE.
3. TAPE MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE FROM LXI THAT IS ALSO BASED ON THE PROCESSOR
FOR EACH MACHINE IT IS LOADED ON.
