Title: RE: join logical keys by secondary file, any free way around this
Tried that, the key can only be part of the "primary" file, basically even with joined logicals, you can only order your lf by one
file... I did some testing with a work file, that got ugly too because of how html is served on the AS/400.
Basically your instance of the program running is not guaranteed, so you really need everything in a neat package when the
cgi program executes.  They app has header records showing on one page for orders, click to hit next program for detail, when
I would try to clrpfm in qtemp sometimes it would work, sometimes it was locked, so I would be records from the previous request,
thus showing me that using a qtemp file would be too risky once multiple users are accessing the web site.
So for now I am just telling management that it has to be ordered by item number until we put the description in the file...

We are running this web site so far on a 620/2179, for five or six people hitting it, response has been beautiful, but I have been
very aware of html page size, and keeping the cgi programs as compact as I can.  Hopefully management will auth. the site
to go live in the next week or two.

Thanks for the help and suggestions, next phase, implementing SSL on it and telnetting to the AS/400 over the web  :0

Could you create a logical file (I don't know this for sure in native mode) that spans both files? Like an SQL join?

we have a primary file with item number in it, and a itemmaster file with
the description, because of processor time limitations,
and the need for instant access (opnqryf on these files takes far too long
for an interactive program to work, and we do not
and will not be getting sql is the word from the bean counters)

The dilemma is that according to V4R5 DDS manual, I cannot use fields from
the "secondary" file as part of the key, but that
is what I need to do, the primary file must be ordered by customer, date,
and lastly by item description...

Any ideas how to circumvent this (big file is primary, and for our little
box, the item mast is not that small either)

I am not really able to just plop the description into this other file
either, the complexity of a change like that is not
pretty, and is too time consuming.

Any ideas, or am I just going to have to tell them, too bad, this is in item
number order, as even pounding in the ile/rpg
to a "keyed" work file is too slow too...

TIA
