You can try to open EXCEL with ODBC to communicate directly with the AS/400.
With Excel 2000, click on data,
get external data
New database query
This should open up a window "Choose data source", along with clippy to ask if
you need help.
Its been a while since I played with it, but I was able to extract data from
different libraries and files.
Hope this points you in the right direction

Does anybody know how to create an Excel file directly
from AS/400 without using Client Access ?
Is there a utility out of there to accomplish this
task ?
