  • Subject: A little S36 history - thanks to Al Barsa

Thanks to Al Barsa.

First there was the S36e (environment) which required recompiling of all
source. But....some customer weren't source/load compatible so they had no
upgrade path.

After the RISC processor came out, IBM came out wtih a Machine 36 that could
run S36 objects natively without recompiling (*M36). First was model 236
(RISC) which was *M36 only. This was followed by the 436 which could
optionally run OS/400 and multiple *M36's concurrently (actually unlimited).

Then, the light bulbs started blinking at IBM: Why have a special model of
the S36?

Later versions of RISC based AS/400's running V3R7 and above allowed *M36
for everyone but IBM stopped supporting it with V4R4 in May of 2001.

Today the only "ongoing" version of S36 is the S36e on the AS/400. When
will IBM stop supporting it?

When all S36's die.

Have I got it right Al? Thanks again.

Jerry
