  • Subject: Can I prevent RCYCNL status by forcing the *LIN to VARY *OFF?
  • From: "Gerald Kern" <gkern@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
  • Date: Fri, 25 May 2001 17:40:37 -0400
  • Importance: Normal

Is there a way to prevent a BSC *LIND from going into RCYCNL? Or, should I
say, is it possible to configure the line so that if it goes into RCYCNL
that it can be automatically varied off? I'm a communications novice so I
may not have provided enough detail to get a usable reply. What I'm trying
to accomplish is to determine if I can change the configuration on a BSC
line so that if it were to go to RCYCNL, I'd prefer it to simply vary itself
off.

Greetings all.

Question: What would your list of the top 10 API's that you wish IBM
would have a command to do?

If possible: Keep it to 10, and Please state the API name if you know
it.

Maybe we can get some results here.

      Hello All,

Is there a way to list all the files and file sizes in a given
library?

I tried the DSPFD with *outfile but the file size is not
available.

The reason I need this is I would like to know, in descending
order,
what files are taking up the most room in our production
library. Then
I can determine what needs to get done with these files, purge,
etc.

We are running BPCS version 6.01.01 Mixed Mode.

Any help, will be greatly appreciated.

Hear, hear! Great idea, Rob! How about it, David?

What would be a good structure for the survey?

Easiest would be to ask: "Do you have a SupportLine contract?" Y/N

But these would also be informative:

"If you have a SupportLine contract, is it 24x7 or 8x5?"

"If you have a SupportLine contract, is it an hourly or a long-term
contract?"

"Regardless of whether you have a SupportLine contract or not, how important
do you feel a SupportLine contract is to the continued successful operation
of
your AS/400(s)?"
_ Would rather jump out of an airplane without a parachute into a
pit of rattlesnakes before I'd go without a SupportLine contract
 _ Somewhat important
_ wishy-washy or have no idea
 _ Not important
 _ Money down the drain.

I'd be curious to know the mix of the MIDRANGE-L population that has an IBM
SupportLine contract. In the past, this was always a given in any shop
I've
worked in but, for reasons unknown to me, we supposedly have only one
SupportLine contract for one of our boxes. Given the fact that we're
mostly
on V3R7 around here, we may not even have a SupportLine contract anymore.

In the past, I considered SupportLine as an absolute necessity before
embarking on any OS upgrade. I may have treated cume PTFs in the same
manner,
although my memory is fuzzy on that. I also seem to recall that, at one
time,
if you had SupportLine you also had IBM hardware service, and vice versa,
but
I know that's not the case now.

I see that IBM is offering a rebate for new SupportLine accounts and
thought
I'd better poll the collective mindset here before I go asking management
to
cough up the bucks for SupportLine, especially before we get going on our
upgrades.

Are there any viable alternatives to SupportLine?

Question: What would your list of the top 10 API's that you wish

If possible: Keep it to 10, and Please state the API name if you

Maybe we can get some results here.

All the user space, user index and data queue APIs. That would greatly
aid in testing, and maybe some simple production programs.

I'd like to see the all user space and data queue API's made into commands
... Especially the DSP set (DSPUSRSPC, DSPDTAQ, etc).

RUNRMTCMD would save you the trouble of having to write the client and
server pieces because you would be using the ones you already bought from
IBM. The server is built in to Client Access.

this is one possible solution... But it requires a little programming...

In your application, retrieve the ip address of the client access session.

write a pc, app, that stays hidden, and cannot be ended, have it it loaded
on startup, that will listen on a port (small socket server).... and when
data comes in on that port, open a window, or run through the current
windows open and set the client access window to the forground... or give
it the on top value :-)

and then to complete the process write a socket client on the as/400 to send
your message to the users ip address along with the message or command...

just a thought.... But it will only work if you can retrieve the users ip
address...

Subject: backups on AS/400, objects missing

Hi Midrange

Thanks Al..

I am keeping the whole message on forum for now as others may appreciate
also your expertise...

Realize some of this is kindergarten stuff so I appreciate your time, though
some of the issues are obviously real significant..

><snip> You should run SAVSECDTA and SAVCFG every day.

Understood, our system user or config change rarely, so unless it is on the
same tape
as the save, we will probably do this once a week... if we put it before
or after
the SAVLIB on the daily tape, we would do it daily...

>Every tape should be initialized uniquely. They way you can use PRTERRLOG

>an example of this, send me a private e-mail, and I will send you a copy of

Great.. Please do.. Thanks.. (I will email you this part separately so you
can hit reply)
I gather you have it available on email .txt .doc or .pdf
May business addy for your records is (yes I don't mind other AS/400
mailings :-)

k.. but if I am not so worried about expiration dates, could I just put in
say a no expiration parameter meaning TODAY ..basically we have a
small shop without any tape confusion so I just want to be sure the
Initialization and Save run without any tape msg intervention
The command for that would be.. ? :-)

Ahh.. well my compatriot recommended it as a solution, after some objects
weren't saved including an important QS36F file .. still don't really know
why...
since the one who checks said nobody was in any user programs (we do have
a domino-network-client access setup that stays up basically 24/7 but the
office is empty and screens are at menus... hmmm maybe there was an evoked
job with a msg that the lady missed, that is the only sensible thought and
it
might match up with the files that didn't save .. you see that is my
concern
eg... if a program is sitting with a msg in the user area and the program
uses
a couple of data files, I still want those files saved.. yes ideally that
shouldn't
be.. :-)

>I have a presentation that I do, and a magazine article, and I would be

Done... Thanks.. Maybe that will answer my questions :-)

>Secondly, SWA does not support *NONSYS.

Ahh. .interesting.. if I switch to *ALLUSR plus separately *IBM is it
supported ?
(yes, I know you mentioned the danger, however there will definitely be
0 activity when this is running and first I just want to get a save to
run and
see the results)

basically first I am wondering why ANY of these would give the subsystem msg
I got....

>Lastly, ALWAYS change the default from ACCPTH (access path) from *NO to
>*YES. It can mean the difference of DAYS of restore time. (I believe the

Will do.. :-)

>PS: Happy Memorial Day Weekend to everyone.

Thanks, and Shavout for those who tend toward scriptural days..

Thanks Al

A little more involved, but maybe a few text boxes to ask:

"What do you like most / least about IBM Support?"

"If you are not a SupportLine customer, what would IBM need to do to
embrace you into the fold?"

"Do you think it's: Too expensive, decent value, prohibitive,
stratospheric?"

"Does the current structure of available services meet your needs? If
not, what changes would you like to see?"

"Have you ever received a correct invoice from IBM?" (OK, that one is
not really relevant to SupportLine, but it's a pet peeve...)

I understand too the frustration, here at least we do have a work around,
from the system console we run
an interactive C/L, prompt screen to enter the start time for shutting down
and doing the save, then a
IPL (still have not convinced anyone that it is not necessary to do
weekly...that aside) and works
great with no one here (unless of a power outage) This works here because
we are the last to leave
the building on Friday nights and lock up the whole place, not just the
computer room - no real security
issue here, but food for thought until IBM sees fit to make our lives easier
(oh wait I'm sorry, we are
in the computer industry, our lives are complicated to make everyone else's
job easier... forgive me ;)

just my 2cents

Al, maybe you've been around the block way too many times to count on this
issue, but what's your take on the fact that a SAVE 21 type of save, one
requiring a dedicated system with all subsystems ended, must be run
interactively from the system console? I find it ridiculous that, after all
these years, IBM still has not given us a solution to this gaping hole. Do
others feel that way? Most shops I know of can only do a dedicated system
backup (which, IMHO, is the only sane way to do a backup; your comments on
SWA
considered) off hours in the middle of the night, and the only way I've been
able to figure out how to accomplish this is to sign on to the console prior
to leaving for the day and start the backup application that waits until
late
at night to start the ENDSBS *ALL and run the backup. Most AS/400 shops
aren't big enough to be able to justify the expense of a night operator.
The
so-called way to secure this is to lock the console using the key on the
display. It would seem to be a no-brainer (well, consider who's talking
here,
o.k.?) to allow a batch job to run from the controlling subsystem in a
restricted state. But what do I know?

I have taken a renewed interest in this pet peeve of mine, considering my
new
responsibilities.

Subject: RE: backups on AS/400; part2

As a seasoned AS/400 bigot who has recently been asked to manage Unix
systems I find myself on the fence on these issues. It drives me crazy that
every time we change a drive in our HP tape library my Unix Administrator
has to drop everything and reconfigure the backups. The layered software
for configuring backups requires that we do it at the correct moment in time
- -- it's not even possible to rewrite the backup in anticipation of
changes.
And don't even talk to me about degree of training necessary to set up a
good Oracle backup.

On the other hand it's starting to surprise me how much we expect OS/400 to
do for us. GO SAVE option 21 is just a CL program. AS/400 documentation
provides a nice poster explaining the different levels of backups, and the
SAV* commands allow you to design backups from a conceptual (or object
based) point of view rather than chasing down disks, volumes, and
directories. I don't think you have to be a certified AS/400 Sys Admin to
design an effective backup. My relatively untrained AS/400-VMS Admin came
up with a good CL to save data libraries, including SAVACT in pretty short
order.

Maybe I'm biased because I've always worked in very large shops. I don't
think it's unreasonable to expect customers to live within the constraints
of the canned options or write their own customizations. The menu options
on the AS/400 evolved from next to nothing over the past decade or so. I
always looked at them as "serving suggestions".

Or maybe I'm just cranky because it's been a long week.

Exactly! Doesn't seem like IBM should be wasting any time writing commands
that we can easily write ourselves. A better question might be "What API's
should IBM provide that they have not already?"
