Not true - you don't have to use the fax master list.  We tried but that
was too cumbersome.  You can use SBMFAX and not use the fax master list.
Correct me if I am wrong but I think that SBMFAX shows up in CHKFAXSTS and
not SNDFAX.

From what I can tell, to use SBMFAX I have to set up entries in a fax
master list.  I don't want to do that.  I already carry the fax number
in the vendor master record, for example.  I want to use the number from
there for sending the PO, not maintain another list.
