Why don't U make like this:
        "runsql 'update FILENAME set item = concat('6', substr(item,1,
100))"  ?

Using SQL, can I modify the first byte of an alpha field without affecting
the rest of the field?

Something like:

runsql 'update FILENAME set substr(item,1,1) = ''6''


I cannot get past the syntax errors with this command.
