I wouldn't say always. Stupid human trick #1. Multi session terminal. Set to wrong session. Three IPL's later, we realize our error. Stupid human trick #2. Sign on wrong too many times. Disabled session. Restricted state. Did IPL to recover - the hard way. Usual problems with twinax wiring. Now, we used a dedicated port. Since there is no twinax outside of computer room anymore, this is not a problem. Had a problem once with twinax controller. Renamed command CRTDEVD to discourage any 5250 on box. Boss replaced terminal when it fried. Different model. Deleted old model but could not build new session. Took some SBMRMTCMD's and passthru to fix that situation. Mostly the whole point of the console is for a system problem. A twinax console ALWAYS works, always. If there's a serious system problem, you have to be able to get to the console. A pc running any emulation-type program is prone to problems, or at least one more possible point of failure. What if you're having problems with the servers? Or any other problem which won't let the PC connect? Or heaven forbid, there's one of those windows problems, it could happen, ya know. :) A word to the wise: I ordered my 170 with operations console AND the twinax card. Since I ordered it with Ops console and wasn't using it, there was an SRC on the panel always. (I forget the number) I had a terminal seemingly working fine as the console, but Rochester informed me that it wasn't REALLY the console. If I had a serious problem, the system may not recognize that it had a console at all and I could have big problems doing DR. They got it fixed, but actually had to get on my machine to do it.
