Computer related science fiction may be off topic, but... Back in the early eighties (before William Gibson) Vernor Vinge wrote a story called "True Names" that pretty much developed all of the conventions of this sort of user interface that have been used in every cyberpunk story since. Only story I can think of that combined swords and sorcry and computing. His "A Fire Upon the Deep" combines space opera with usenet and mailing lists. The first cyborg (body hard wired to computer) stories came earlier--don't know what the first one was. Seems to me Cordwainer Smith did one around 1950 but that may not be even close to the first. The concept had been pretty much beaten to death by the time the word "cyborg" was coined. > -----Original Message----- > From: rob@dekko.com [mailto:rob@dekko.com] > Sent: Thursday, April 26, 2001 7:55 AM > To: MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com > Subject: RE: No 5250-based applications > > > > Or how about the Virtual Reality interface, as touted in the > 'Net Force' > series published by Tom Clancy? > > Rob Berendt > > ================== > Remember the Cole! > +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
