Double click Network Neighborhood. See all those computer names? Those
were returned either by Netbios or a Nameserver.

\\somecomputer\public

somecomputer is resolved via netbios.

Turn on your computer in the morning. A message is sent out over the
network requesting the primary netbios server. Every computer comes
back and says "me! me! I'm the primary!". Traffic each computer
tries to be the primary, until one primary is established. There is
a way to turn this off for computers, although I don't remember what
it is, some setting about not being a primary name server or something.

Jim Langston

Subject: OS/400 Netbios

What is netbios used for in OS/400?

Reviewing the archives, I see a lot that seems to be related to Netserver
and name resolution, but can somebody please put this in context for me,
like give me some examples of user and/or system activities that cause
netbios traffic to be generated. I see TCP/IP ports open in WRKTCPSTS *CNN
that say they are for netbios. Thanks in advance.
