not slick, just dangerous. The way I put it, it is obvious that the answer
is 2 (unsigned). However the real life case that bit me had XX hidden
in a COPY book.

Here is another real case:
02 XXX PIC S9(9) COMP-4 VALUE 123456789.
02 ZZZ  PIC S9(6) COMP-4 REDEFINES XXX.
MOVE ZZZ TO ZZZ
