They used to upgrade regularly, enhancing their base software. While I don't think that a company should upgrade just for the hell of it, I don't think that their cross reference has been completely refined. I've also been told by our developers that the cross reference changes for ILE have much room for improvement. It surprises me that they've stopped (or paused) in their enhancements. Also, I've had two lingering issues with them for years. First, the field cross reference and object cross reference use different search methods for locating unqualified objects. The object cross reference works across a defined library list while the field cross reference will locate libraries alphabetically. If you're maintaining development and production cross references on the same server it can create a mess, particularly if you're developing database changes. Their reply has been that no one else has complained and fixing it might cause problems for other customers. Also, they never changed their disk changes utility to cope with large objects when OS/400 expanded its object size constraints. The disk changes utility is one of the coolest system administration reports in the world if you don't have files over their 10 Gb limit. Their reply has been that no one else has complained and fixing it might cause problems for other customers. I had to kick and scream just to get them to change the reports to warn you of when it is truncating object sizes. I've complained to them that they are not keeping pace with IBM's operating system changes. -----Original Message----- From: Robert Perno [mailto:r_perno@wshein.com] Sent: Tuesday, April 03, 2001 7:03 AM To: 'MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com' Subject: RE: Hawkeye Jim, We are on 8.2 (Dec. 98). I think this is the last release they came out with. From my point of view, I don't look at how often we upgrade the software but how well the existing software works. Pathfinder has been a valuable tool in our shop - use it quite frequently. Is it the annual maintenance costs that are frosting you? Robert D. Perno Sr. Programmer/Analyst William S. We've grown to depend on Pathfinder since it was on the System 38. I can't imagine running a system without it, but they haven't issued a new release in years.
