Leif, I thought the shorter string isn't known at compile-time? Or is this
merely to avoid hard-coding lengths?  In any event, try adding the VARYING
keyword to your string declarations in the RPG program.  You'll be
astonished.

On my box Type 9406 model 620 prc grp P20 fc 2179 1024 meg rel V4R4M0, I
get:
MI: 1.57
RPG fixed: 3.01
RPG varying: 0.22

No programs optimised, all submitted to batch, non-dedicated but not heavily
used.  Time to write the code, approx. 5 minutes - I have a performance
bench template I drew on as a skeleton.
