>Java is better for vector and string manipulation than RPG... I don't disagree with the above statement. It's just that it's ealily remedied. Buy or build an ILE Vector module, and assemble a collection of string manipulation subprocedures (you won't need many). String manipulation is not a good reason to choose Java over RPG for web development. RPG BIFs have narrowed the distinctions considerably, and anything you lack is fairly trivial to build. That's not to say there aren't other reasons for some people to choose Java for web development. It's just that I don't see string manipulation as being one of them.
