Hi Bruce,
BUT ... can we rely on the OV APIs to still work, and be supported,
when OV has finally gone; somehow I doubt it.

I checked out an AS/400 at v4r5, it has never had OV installed on
it; I checked out the call-stack when using the HLPDOC function. These QO*
programs were all in QSYS. I guess that answers my question. If in a later
version/release of OS/400 the HLPDOC function changes under the covers, so
be it; as long as it will continue to work when our users press the F1 key,
we will be happy - more so for not having to change our applications.

I have heard on the grapevine that there is an MS-Word 'extension'
that will enable it to edit OS/400 documents directly in the QDLS folder.
Has anyone else heard this, and perhaps pass on any details ?

The reason for leaving the commands is that they can still work. The
system API Change Office Program (QOGCHGOE) allows one to register
what exit program should be called for document handling and document
conversion. The default is *IBM which means OfficeVision, but an
enterprising developer could always build their own editor. This editor
would then be called by EDTDOC, CRTDOC, etc. This API, and the
associated Exit Program parameter interfaces, can be found in the
Office category of System APIs.
