You don't have to change your system name...

WRKDIRE
choose 2 (change) on the user id that is sending the mail
F19 - Change Name for SMTP
Put whatever you want the header to say in the 'SMTP user ID' and 'SMTP
domain'

Yes, it is.  I cannot change it because it is used in various places. 
Particularly, I believe the AnyNet configuration has it.

I guess there's no way to stop the system name from being put into the
header, then?  I tried using a different username on the USRID
parameter, but I never got my message.  I haven't gone looking for it
yet...  But it should have been sent by now.

Same message without the USRID parameter was delivered immediately. 
Odd.
