Not in all cases.  For example they tried to ignore the web (Bill didn't
think it would amount to much) and had to scramble to recover.  There have
been other examples (MS Bob anyone?) where they thought that they would
lead in a particular technology but found that nobody wanted it.  MS money
is another example.

MS trying to "Kill" Java has nothing to do with the technical merits of the
language - it has everything to do with retaining MS dominance on the
desktop.  They failed in their attempts to "bend" Java so that it was still
reliant on the MS desktop, so they have packed up their toys and gone home
to sulk.

MS will only succeed in killing Java if all the other players fight among
themselves.  Personally I'd love for Java to succeed to the extent that MS
finish up having to buy some company or other in order to reenter the Java
business.
