I use a FreeBSD machine as a NAT gateway & firewall for my whole LAN.
(yes, at home...  you mean there are people with less than 6 PCs in their
house?)  Despite your comment about "horror stores about the free stuff"
FreeBSD is free and is infinitely more secure than ANYTHING running on
Windows.  OpenBSD is probably even more secure, yet.

You need to also remember that a firewall does not make ANYTHING more
secure, it merely blocks access to/from the internet.   If you have an
insecure program that's able to send packets to/from the internet,
the firewall is not protecting you.   

And every program is insecure to one degree or another.
