We used to use alternate consoles a lot on the old S/36 CNFIGSSP because it was like giving users an extra 1/2 session that did not count against the total number of devices, but of course you had to have a printer for it to be the alternate console to ... on the S/36 we had several phantom printers to organize our reports, because S/36 did not have OUTQs, then we spread the alternate consoles to those phantoms around so that power users could use that extra 1/2 session for all the HELP D stuff.
