Two main reasons to upgrade: 1) It's free (if indeed you are Software Subscription) 2) IBM withdraws support for V4R3 on Jan 31, 2001 http://www.as400service.ibm.com/supporthome.nsf/Document/17623433 plus the upgrade goes smoothly (I've done about 5 of them so far direct from V4R3), and there are some enhancements and performance improvements (especially TCP/IP) and each new release seems to include some enhancements to SQL. See the V4R4 & V4R5 Memo To Users - SNDPTFORD SF98046 & SF98056 - for a summary of changes. Downside ? Well, like all newer releases, each one takes a bit more disk space. Greetings Thou Most Enlightened Mid-Rangers and Illuminators of the eServer/iSeries/Uh... whatever, path. I am @ V4R3 at present, which seems to have all the blessed favors from IBM which I have wit to engage. Should I Upgrade to V4R5? If so Why? And supposing I should, what exciting adventures am I likely to encounter in the process? What quits working? What do you, see as a significant improvement in upgrading? Is 4.5 slower/faster? Does it require more resources? Are any functions/capabilities significantly enhanced? I am attempting to code in RpgIV/C ILE with just a tad of Sql, which remains largely an unexplored, dark and dangerous territory, and making heavy use of APIs, mostly for a 5250 audience both wired and wireless, at present. How can an upgrade further my insignificant, fumbling efforts? Running a 620-2175 with I believe, software subscription. I would be most thankful for any bits of wisdom which you might wish to reveal.
