Chris,

It appears you hit a known problem at V4R4. We have upgraded several
systems to V4R4 and I noticed in the Hiper PSP documentation that they
recommend you load SF99440 (C0252440 at the time) following the shipped
instructions and then IPL. There is a fix that must be permanently applied
BEFORE you attempt to load the cumulative ptf package (per the
instructions). Failure to follow those instructions can cause the PTF apply
process to fail. With the advent of the AS/400 Service web site there is no
reason not to review the HIPER PSP documentation prior to a release upgrade.

Subject: PTFs

Recently there have been some issues with PTFs noted here on the list. One
user yesterday had a problem with performing an IPL to the B side. We had
the same problem with the same SRC here in our shop. The problem came from
3 "faulty" PTFs on the most recent CUM package. These PTFs are not bad,
but without having the prerequisite applied, the system is known to
fail. Only one of the three PTFs we were told were in error had the
requisite PTF in the cover letter. It could be easy to miss that cover
letter in the process of review.

My question is how do iSeries shops go through the PTF loading
process? Does everyone look through the cover letters of every PTF on a
CUM, hiper, or group PTF package?

Just curious,
Chris Whisonant
